turning the game into a rout.

MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins proved they can win the close ones, too. After scoring 18 runs in their last two wins, the Marlins found that winning a tight game can be just as enjoyable. Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee hit consecutive run-scoring singles off David Carpenter during a two-run rally in the seventh inning that led the Marlins to a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night and a three-game sweep of the NL East leader. "Honestly, I like wins, I dont care how we get them," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "9-0 is fun, but a game like tonight, 5-4, where youre putting guys in some situations they havent been in and see how they respond, thats fun too." Miami has won six straight home games for the first time at Marlins Park, which opened in 2012. It is the longest home winning streak for the team since the Marlins won eight in a row from June 20 to July 1, 2009. With the Marlins trailing 4-3, pinch-hitter Reed Johnson singled off Ian Thomas (1-1) leading off the seventh and took second on Christian Yelichs single. Derek Dietrich lined out, and Carpenter relieved and gave up the back-to-back hits. "Weve done a really good job in putting ourselves in situations to have a chance late in games," McGehee said. "Fortunately, tonight we were able to get some hits that were big." Mike Dunn (3-3) pitched a hitless seventh, and Steve Cishek got four outs for his sixth save in seven chances to complete the Marlins first series sweep of Atlanta since 2009. Cishek relieved with two on and two outs in the eighth, walked Andrelton Simmons, then struck out pinch-hitter Ramiro Pena and pitched a perfect ninth. The Marlins bullpen allowed one hit in three shutout innings. Cishek admitted being a bit nervous between the eighth and ninth innings. "I was pacing around the dugout," he said. "I wanted the offence to get more runs, of course, but I was just trying to stay focused and stay sharp mentally and make sure I was ready to get back out there and get the job done." The Marlins swept Atlanta at home for the first time since June 13-15, 2006. "Its huge for us," Redmond said. "These guys keep battling and keep pushing forward and moving on and really picking each other up playing with a lot of energy out there." Garrett Jones had a home run for the Marlins. Evan Gattis and B.J. Upton homered for the Braves. Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings, giving up multiple homers in a game for the first time since Sept. 24, 2012. Atlanta starter Ervin Santana gave up three runs and five hits in six innings. The last time the Braves lost three straight was Sept. 15-17, 2013. "The way they scored in the seventh inning, they got a couple balls to drop and they got some ground balls that got through the infield off of Carpenter," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We had some opportunities. Now we take a flight home and stop this losing streak." Miami led 2-0 in the third when Justin Heyward, batting with one on, grounded softly to Jones at first, who tossed to Alvarez covering the base. Heyward was initially called out by first base umpire Jim Reynolds, but the call was reversed by the review umpire in New York when a replay showed Alvarez missed the bag and the tag. Upton followed with a three-run homer. Adeiny Hechavarria hit an RBI grounder in the fourth, but Gattis homer put Atlanta back ahead in the sixth. NOTES: Upton has hit safely in 15 of the last 18 games in which he has had an at-bat. ... Braves RHP Gavin Floyd is expected to be activated by Sunday and initially pitch out of the bullpen. . McGehee got his 300th RBI in the first inning. ... The Marlins finished April with an 11-4 home record, a 2.40 home ERA and a .307 home batting average. They ranked first in the majors in home wins. ... The Marlins nine-game homestand continues Friday with the opener of a weekend set against the Los Angeles Dodgers. ... Atlanta returns home Friday to play a weekend series against San Francisco. Paul Thompson Jersey . Mark Teahen scored the go-ahead run in the home seventh on an error by Scott Sizemore, who had knotted the game with a solo homer in the previous half- inning. Paul Konerko then hit an RBI single which proved to be the winning run. Cody Eakin Jersey . Minutes before the final whistle of Sporting Kansas Citys 3-0 victory over a shorthanded Montreal Impact squad on Saturday afternoon, Saputo tweeted: "Our fans deserve better. http://www.goldenknightsnhlshop.com/alex-tuch-golden-knights-jersey-c-37/ .com) - The Denver Nuggets snapped a losing streak last time out and will try to carry that momentum Saturday night when they welcome the Indiana Pacers to the Pepsi Center. Jake Bischoff Jersey . The struggling New Orleans Pelicans were simply overmatched. Crawford hit seven 3s on his way to 24 points, and the Clippers beat the Pelicans 123-110 on Monday night. "We understand what we do well. If we all do what we do well, well make our team stronger," Crawford said. Marc-Andre Fleury Jersey . He could have transferred when academic sanctions barred the Huskies from the NCAA tournament his junior season.DENVER - Nathan MacKinnon finally found his shooting touch on a night when his goalie turned back everything.Just what the frustrated MacKinnon needed. Same goes for Semyon Varlamov, a hard-luck loser in his last few starts.MacKinnon scored his first two goals of the season, and Varlamov stopped 40 shots for his 14th NHL shutout, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-0 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday. The 19-year-old MacKinnon has struggled to get on track this season. He scored both of his goals in the second period, one on a power play — hopping up and down on his skates to celebrate — and the other when he tipped a shot past goalie Chad Johnson.I figured (a goal) would come sooner or later, said MacKinnon, the reigning NHL rookie of the year. Obviously, a little later than I wanted, but its all in the past now.Varlamov was sharp against the Islanders, one of the leagues highest scoring teams. It was his first shutout since April 5 at St. Louis. The Russian showed no signs of fatigue after making 49 saves in a shootout loss to San Jose two nights earlier. He has stopped 89 shots in his last two games.Hes one of the best, if not the best, in the game right now, Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said.No argument from Islanders coach Jack Capuano.Pretty good to me, Capuano said. Give him credit. This was a big boost for Varlamovs psyche, especially after a rough start early in the season and then missing time because of a groin injury.Right now, its very important for me to get my confidence back, Varlamov said. We scored a lot of goals, too. We get our confidence back for our offence.Cody McLeod and Marc-Andre Cliche also netted their first goals of the season. Erik Johnson added another in the third period. The Avalanche took command with a three-goal second period, turning the game into a rout. That is a departure for these teams in Denver, where the last seven meetings had been decided by one goal.Tempers flared late, with New Yorks Cal Clutterbuck and McLeod shoving eaach other near the Avalanche bench.dddddddddddd Both were sent to the penalty box for roughing. Seconds later, Johnson scored on a power play to make it 5-0. The defenceman also added an assist. The Islanders struggled on the power play, going 0-for-6.Couldnt capitalize, Capuano said. Weve got to score goals. In this league, every night, got to score two to three to win. If you dont, youre not going to win hockey games. At the morning skate, MacKinnon said his scoring slump wasnt weighing on him and that he wouldnt change anything about his play.Ill get a bounce one of these nights, MacKinnon said.He did. There was a collision in front of the Islanders net with three players falling on top of Gabriel Landeskog near the crease. Johnson tried to stand tall, but fell. MacKinnon skated backward with the puck to create some separation and then lined a shot into the upper corner. His eyes grew wide when the puck went in, and he raised his arms. He then hopped around as his teammates engulfed him.Later, Jarome Iginla corralled a puck on the side and sent a pass that MacKinnon tipped to the right of Johnsons stick.MacKinnon had 24 goals and 39 assists last season in helping the Avalanche return to the playoffs. His slow start mirrored that of last season, though, when he had one goal through the opening 11 games.McLeod scored 2:34 into the game on a feed from Matt Duchene, who was left alone behind the net.Islanders captain John Tavares almost tied it, but his shot just before the buzzer to end the first clanged off the crossbar.Got to find a way to get a little bit more gritty, Tavares said. Find a way to get an ugly one, get a bounce to go your way. Its obviously a frustrating loss.NOTES: New York D Travis Hamonic missed his fourth straight game because of an upper-body injury. ... Islanders RW Kyle Okposo played in his 400th career game. ... The Islanders next stop on their five-game trip is Saturday at San Jose. ... F Maxime Talbot and Duchene each had two assists.
